5 Essential Strategies for Fostering Healthy Communication in Relationships Amid Mental Health Challenges

Updated: Jun 21

Marriage, what can I say? It's hard! Some days are blissful, some are silent, and some feel like you are just surviving. My husband and I have been together for 12 years, married for 3, and my mental health struggles have always been our third wheel; we're in a throuple if you are so inclined. Mike and I have different views on mental health, what it is, and how to address it. Honestly, I'm not sure Mike believes in mental health. I extend grace because he has never experienced it, and I honestly think if you haven't lived it, it may be close to impossible to understand the depths of hell that is chronic depression.

These differences cause disagreements, resentment, and frustration on both of our parts. We talk, and argue, and work to get through it. Navigating relationships where mental health is a factor requires compassion, understanding, and intentional communication. Whether you’re supporting a partner, friend, or family member—or managing your own mental health—these strategies can foster healthy, supportive dialogue and work for both parties.

5 Strategies to Foster Healthy Communication in Relationships Amid Mental Health Challenges

1. Prioritize Active Listening - Be present and truly listen, sometimes just being heard is enough.

2. Use Compassionate Language - Be selective and careful in your word choices, avoid dismissive remarks.

3. Respect Boundaries & Emotional Needs - Be present for your partner, but respect boundaries when needed; everyone processes differently.

4. Express Your Own Needs Too - Supporting a partner with mental health can be taxing, so express and communicate your needs as well.

5. Learn & Grow Together - Enhance your understanding through learning with your partner, adapting communication styles as you go and learn more.

We all know the number one piece of marriage advice we often receive is to communicate. Why? Communication builds connection and helps you grow together. Approach every conversation with understanding, empathy, and love, and you can't go wrong.

Let's keep the conversation going. The blog offers more about our journey and access to mental health, well-being, and mindfulness resources.
