From Overwhelmed to Intentional: Why I Created the Blog - Drifting Towards Simplicity

Updated: Jun 22

The Moment Everything Changed

It was a typical Wednesday morning. My husband had just returned from his workout, and I was sipping coffee, preparing for a work-from-home day. He walked into the living room and said:

“I think we should consider leaving the United States.”

I froze. Could this be the change we needed? After months of feeling drained by hustle culture, facing personal struggles, and longing for something different, this was the moment that shifted everything. My Type A personality kicked into overdrive—planning, dreaming, and exploring options for a simpler, more intentional life.

Why We Chose Simplicity Over Chaos

The decision to leave wasn’t impulsive—it was the result of deep reflection and a growing realization that our current lifestyle no longer aligned with our values. Here are the five key reasons that led us to embrace intentional living and the possibility of moving abroad:

1. Our Careers No Longer Bring Us Joy

We spent years chasing career growth yet found ourselves feeling disconnected and unfulfilled. Success, as defined by corporate culture, no longer felt like true success to us.

2. My Mental Health Struggles Are Persistent and Debilitating

The fast-paced lifestyle and constant pressures took a toll on my mental well-being. Slowing down became not just a desire, but a necessity for healing and balance.

3. The Political Environment in the United States Is Unsettling

With increasing division and uncertainty, we realized that we wanted to create a life grounded in peace, stability, and long-term well-being rather than stress over factors beyond our control.

4. We Want to Show Our Children the World

Limited vacation days make it nearly impossible to truly explore and experience different cultures. We want our children to see beyond the American work cycle—to embrace travel, diversity, and global perspectives.

5. We Want to Live Slower—For Experiences, Not Things

At its core, this journey is about choosing presence over possessions. Life shouldn’t be defined by accumulating things but by cherishing meaningful moments and deep connections.

What Drifting Towards Simplicity Represents

This blog was born from a desire to document our transition, to share our insights, and to connect with others who might feel the same pull toward a slower, more intentional way of living. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress, reflection, and finding joy in simplicity.
