In one of my first blog posts, I mentioned my husband's surprising statement:
'I think we should leave the United States'.
Moving abroad is exciting but requires careful planning to minimize stress and maintain our goal of living simply. Here's a simplified checklist I developed after researching and learning from others who made similar decisions.

Research Your Destination
Before packing, ensure you understand the logistics of moving, including:
✅ Visa requirements & residency rules
✅ Cost of living & housing options
✅ Cultural differences & language basics
We are here - currently researching Portugal, Malta, Canada, Colombia, and Panama. All very different, but all offering key differences to the United States that we are interested in and want for our family.
Organize Documents & Finances
Have your paperwork in order for a seamless transition, including:
✅ Passport, visa, & work permits
✅ Bank accounts & international financial setup
✅ Health insurance & medical records
Downsize & Pack Smart
Since moving internationally can be costly, **simplifying your belongings** makes sense.
✅ Sell or donate items you won’t need
✅ Check airline baggage restrictions
✅ Use vacuum-sealed bags for efficiency
Secure Housing & Essentials Before Arrival
Ensure accommodations and services are ready prior to arrival:
✅ Arrange housing
✅ Set up utilities & mobile service
✅ Plan airport transportation
Plan for Emotional & Social Adjustments
Adjusting to a new country takes time—give yourself grace!
✅ Connect with expat groups for support
✅ Research local customs & etiquette
✅ Stay open to new experiences
🌍 Moving Abroad = A Fresh Start
An international move is a big adventure—but with preparation, it can be exciting, smooth, and stress-free! What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing right now?
