My journey of integrating spiritual practices into my life has been anything but linear and is constantly evolving. As I reflect on my mental health journey, I believe the lack of connection to a spiritual practice may have impacted my mental health and well-being in numerous ways. I did not grow up participating in any organized religion, and I question the effects that this absence of connection to such a community has had on me. My husband, Mike, and I have recently started attending a new church, and we are actively working to ensure our daughter feels connected and included in the broader church community.
I'll be honest, I have always been skeptical of church. Many churches in Dallas, Texas, seem more like major businesses than spiritual communities, and I question their motives. I've spent years joking about what would happen if I ever entered a house of worship and felt strongly that weekly attendance would never be for me. However, that has changed. I am enjoying this new journey, and in my search for meaning, health, and happiness, I am open to everything, including a more traditional path to spirituality and other spiritual practices such as breathing, meditation, and journaling.

What is spirituality?
Spirituality is a much broader concept than is often understood. It involves finding meaning, connection, and purpose beyond the material world. It can take many forms, including religious faith and modern mindfulness practices. Spirituality also provides a sense of connectedness with oneself, others, nature, or a higher power, however you may define it.
The Link between Spirituality and Mental Health
Spirituality builds mental health by nurturing resilience, meaning, and connection. It encourages individuals to self-reflect, embrace uncertainty gracefully, and cultivate emotional balance through mindful practices. Whether expressed through faith, meditation, or creative exploration, spirituality fosters belonging within oneself and in a broader community.
This connection can serve as a powerful tool for loneliness, anxiety, and stress, reinforcing emotional stability during life’s challenges. Spirituality becomes a guiding force in nurturing emotional well-being without rigid expectations when approached with flexibility and authenticity.
