Keeping Up with Work When You're Depressed

Updated: Jun 22

Honestly, I'm really dealing with this right now! When my depression kicks in, even the easiest things can feel like a huge challenge, not to mention staying productive at work. It's frustrating, tiring, and often makes me feel alone, but I know I'm not the only one going through this. Here are some practical ways I'm TRYING! to balance work while taking care of my mental health.

🛑 Acknowledge Your Limits

Dealing with my depression really zaps my energy and focus, and ignoring it just makes everything tougher. I'm working on letting myself slow down and take things at a different pace. I'm planning to try out the tips below and think you should give them a shot too.

✅ Notice when you're having a tough time instead of pushing yourself too hard.

✅ Change your expectations—sometimes just getting the basics done is totally fine.

✅ Drop the guilt—your value isn't about how much you accomplish.

🗂️ Prioritize Small, Manageable Tasks

When depression makes everything feel impossible, I'm trying to break tasks into smaller steps.

💡 Instead of “Finish the project”, try “Write one email”.

💡 Instead of “Clean my entire workspace”, try “Tidy one corner”.

💡 Instead of “Be productive all day”, try “Focus for 20 minutes”.

🚀 Use Energy Wisely

My depression often means low motivation and unpredictable energy levels. Instead of working harder, I need to work smarter.

✅ Schedule tasks for when you feel most capable (mornings might be better for focus).

✅ Automate repetitive work (templates, scheduling tools, etc.).

✅ Take breaks strategically—movement, fresh air, or a simple reset can help.

📢 Communicate If You Can

If possible, let someone know you’re struggling - for me, this is both my husband, but also my boss. This doesn’t mean oversharing—just setting expectations.

💡 Ask for flexibility—a slight deadline extension can make a huge difference.

💡 Delegate when possible—you don’t have to do everything alone.

💡 Consider remote or modified work options if they help manage symptoms.

🧘 Protect Your Mental Health at Work

Work can be exhausting, but small changes can make it less draining.

✅ Set boundaries—disconnect after work instead o carrying stress home.

✅ Create a soothing workspace—even small things like soft lighting or headphones help.

✅ Celebrate small wins—progress counts, even when it feels insignificant.

💙 Tell Yourself You're Doing Enough

Depression makes everything harder, but you are not failing just because work feels overwhelming. Adjust, simplify, and give yourself grace—you’re doing the best you can, and that’s enough. Want to read more about my mental health journey, explore here - Mental Health.
