Deep Dive into IOP: A Participant’s Journey Toward Better Mental Health

Updated: Jun 22

Taking the First Step

Deciding to prioritize my mental health wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. After years of struggling with stress and depression, I knew I needed structured support—something beyond the occasional therapy session. That’s when I took the leap and enrolled in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to focus on healing and resilience.

What Is IOP and Why I Chose It

Intensive Outpatient Programs provide structured, therapeutic support without requiring full-time hospitalization. For me, it was about finding a proactive solution—something that would help me regain balance before I reached a crisis point. As my doctor described it, this was a way to avoid a future ER visit by addressing my mental health now.

The program is four weeks long, with sessions three evenings per week, each lasting three hours. It felt manageable yet comprehensive enough to make a meaningful impact.

The Financial Reality

Mental health care in the U.S. can be expensive, and despite having good health insurance, there were financial hurdles. Our plan had a high deductible, which allowed us to maximize our HSA (Health Savings Account) contributions and receive employer contributions—but it also meant that I hadn’t met my deductible yet. As a result, the program cost me approximately $2,500 USD out-of-pocket.

Making It Work in My Daily Life

Balancing work and this type of therapy isn’t easy, but I made intentional adjustments to ensure I could fully engage in the program. Here’s what helped:

- Requesting accommodations: I arranged to work from home (WFH) for the month, which removed commute stress and allowed me to focus on recovery.

- Setting clear boundaries: On therapy days, I committed to finishing work by 4 PM, ensuring I had the emotional and mental capacity to engage in sessions.

These small changes will help me create the space I need to heal while still fulfilling professional responsibilities.

Where I Am Now

At this moment, I have not yet begun the program. I am preparing to engage with each session and anticipate the lessons that will unfold along the way. Since I haven't started, I don’t have any final takeaways yet, but I am eager to begin the journey—to learn, process, and develop tools that will support my long-term mental health.

Sometimes, I wonder if I will experience a significant shift once I start, but I remind myself that healing is not a single event—it’s a continuous process of small, intentional steps.
